It was to be Luciana’s fate to wed a high ranking nobleman of the kingdom to strengthen her family’s lofty position, a fact that she did not wholeheartedly accept. So Valeria took in upon herself prepare her daughter for marriage. She was trained in the social graces of etiquette, dancing, and even a bit of singing. Luciana also learned how to weave and embroider. She became quite skilled with a needle and a loom that soon she began creating tapestries and making her father’s shirts. Luciana made her societal debut at the court of Etrias during summer of her seventeenth year. Using her natural charm and quick wit, the noble woman enchanted her fellow courtier, making a most notable impression on the matriach of the Maulesel family. It was soon decided that an alliance would be made by the two noble houses and sealed forever by the marriage of Luciana and the new Duke of Ascalon, Amalric Maulesel. When Luciana discovered the betrothal, she was not the least bit pleased. She had been hoping for an engagement that was a bit more romantic, with flowers, gifts, and poetry, but more importantly an engagement that was to a man of her choosing. Yet, she hid her displeasure and consigned herself to be the most happy future Duchess of Ascalon.
